This talk examines Kant's engagement with Stoic fate and its implications for his conception of freedom. Kant's discussion of Stoic fate sheds light on his understanding of freedom, especially the relationship between practical and transcendental freedom. The talk traces Kant's engagement with Stoic fate through three stages: his early Nova Dilucidatio; his lecture notes from the period immediately before the first Critique; and his later philosophy of history. Through an analysis of these texts, I demonstrate how Kant's response to the problem of Stoic fate evolves, shaping his mature distinction between practical and transcendental freedom. Finally, the talk shows how Kant's references to Stoic fate and providence in his philosophy of history connect to his earlier systematic concerns. This reveals continuities, as well as important innovations, in his contemplation of freedom, causality, and human agency throughout his philosophical development.
